★ The Great Plains ★

The wheat that came over in a trunk

Kansas became the breadbasket of the world partly because of a few bushels of seed carried in luggage. In 1874 Mennonite families emigrating from Russia brought Turkey Red, a hard winter wheat that could be planted in fall, survive a plains winter under the snow and be harvested before the worst of the summer heat. It suited the prairie in a way the soft wheats from back east never had.

The weather is the other half of the story. The strange stillness before a plains thunderstorm is real: as a big storm builds, it draws the surrounding air up into itself, and the wind can die away completely just before the gust front hits.

Wheat bending, an old fence post, one bird and a sky about to open. Black and white suits it.

Important time to show support for our country

My office has slowly turned into an American museum. I started with the Iwo Jima painting, but now I've got a full wall of historical American posters. Quality is great and easy to hang.
