★ The Open Road ★

The road they decommissioned and kept driving

Route 66 opened in 1926 and ran about 2,400 miles from Chicago to Santa Monica, bending through small towns the interstates would later skip. Dust Bowl families drove it west in the 1930s, and Steinbeck called it the mother road. After the war it became the road for the family vacation, and an entire roadside America grew up along it: diners, motor courts, gas stations with hand-painted signs, giant concrete dinosaurs.

The interstates bypassed it town by town, and in 1985 it was officially removed from the federal highway system. Nobody stopped driving it. Long stretches are now signed as Historic Route 66, and people fly in from Europe and Japan to rent a car and do the whole length.

A lone stop at the edge of the desert with the sun going down is the image everyone carries of it.

Important time to show support for our country

My office has slowly turned into an American museum. I started with the Iwo Jima painting, but now I've got a full wall of historical American posters. Quality is great and easy to hang.
