Desert Gold $225
Desert Gold print, close-up of the premium semi-glossy fine-art paper surface.
★ The Sonoran Desert ★

A cactus that grows in exactly one desert

The saguaro, the cactus everyone draws when they draw the West, grows naturally in only one place: the Sonoran Desert of southern Arizona, a sliver of California and northwest Mexico. Every cartoon cowboy standing beside one in Texas is standing in the wrong state.

They are astonishingly slow. A saguaro may be only a few inches tall after its first decade and often goes fifty years or more before it grows its first arm. A big one can live for close to two centuries, and its pleated ribs expand like an accordion after rain, so a fully watered giant can weigh several tons.

At sunset the low light catches the ribs edge-on and the whole desert goes gold for a few minutes before it goes blue. That's the moment in the frame.

Important time to show support for our country

My office has slowly turned into an American museum. I started with the Iwo Jima painting, but now I've got a full wall of historical American posters. Quality is great and easy to hang.
