A horse named for a quarter mile

The American Quarter Horse got its name in colonial Virginia and the Carolinas, where settlers raced horses down village streets and cleared lanes about a quarter mile long. Over that distance nothing could touch them. The breed is still the fastest horse in the world at a sprint, able to hit around 55 miles an hour.

When the cattle business moved west, the same horse turned out to be perfect for it: compact, strong behind, able to start, stop and turn on a dime to cut a single cow out of a herd. It became the cowboy's horse, and today it is the most registered breed in America.
