★ American Summer ★

Stars and stripes as a way of dressing

For much of the twentieth century, wearing stars and stripes was a statement you had to mean. The Flag Code of 1942 discouraged using the flag as clothing, and in the 1960s a flag shirt could get you arrested.

Then came 1976. The Bicentennial turned red, white and blue into the national dress code. Stars and stripes turned up on everything from sneakers to swimsuits to fire hydrants, and the pattern never really left. Today a flag-print swimsuit on the Fourth of July is about as controversial as a hot dog.

Hot blue court, white lines, a basketball and a stars-and-stripes swimsuit. This is American summer as pure pop color: bold, cheerful and a little bit loud. It's the color version of Endless Summer, if you want the pair.

Important time to show support for our country

My office has slowly turned into an American museum. I started with the Iwo Jima painting, but now I've got a full wall of historical American posters. Quality is great and easy to hang.
