Bayou Fog $225
★ The Deep South ★

A tree they called the wood eternal

The bald cypress is the tree of the Southern swamp: flared trunks standing in black water, grey moss hanging from the branches. Its heartwood resists rot so well that builders called it the wood eternal, and old cypress logs are still pulled out of the bayous and milled after lying underwater for a hundred years.

The odd little knobs rising out of the water around the trunk are cypress knees, and nobody is completely sure what they do. The old theory that they help the roots breathe has never been proven. The Atchafalaya Basin in Louisiana, the largest river swamp in the country, is full of them.

Morning fog lying on the water, cypress and herons, before the heat burns it off. It's quiet and a little mysterious, and it looks best in soft light.

Important time to show support for our country

My office has slowly turned into an American museum. I started with the Iwo Jima painting, but now I've got a full wall of historical American posters. Quality is great and easy to hang.
