Stars & Cross — detail of the artwork
★ In God We Trust ★

Flag, cross, and a motto first struck on a two-cent coin

"In God We Trust" went onto American money long before it was a national motto. In November 1861, a Pennsylvania minister, the Rev. M. R. Watkinson, wrote to the Treasury asking that the country's coins acknowledge God, and Treasury Secretary Salmon Chase took up the idea. The words first appeared on a coin in 1864, on the two-cent piece.

It stayed a coin inscription for decades. "E pluribus unum," out of many, one, had served as the country's unofficial motto since the design of the Great Seal. President Eisenhower signed the law making "In God We Trust" the national motto on July 30, 1956, and it reached paper money the next year, on the one-dollar silver certificate.

Here the words are left to the symbols. The picture has the look of a stained-glass window with a rounded top: a deep blue field with gold stars arcing across the upper left, a tall gold cross with beveled arms and a starburst behind it, and the red and cream stripes of the flag rippling across the lower half and up the right side. Dark leaded lines cut every color into small pieces, and the light seems to come from behind.

Important time to show support for our country

My office has slowly turned into an American museum. I started with the Iwo Jima painting, but now I've got a full wall of historical American posters. Quality is great and easy to hang.
