Blessed are the Peacemakers — detail of the artwork

★ Matthew 5:9 ★

The seventh Beatitude, from the Sermon on the Mount

In the Gospel of Matthew, the Sermon on the Mount opens with a run of blessings known as the Beatitudes. The seventh reads, in the King James Version: "Blessed are the peacemakers: for they shall be called the children of God."

The Greek word behind "peacemakers," eirenopoioi, appears only here in the New Testament. It is built from the words for peace and for making or doing, so it describes people who act, not people who merely stay out of trouble.

Of the Beatitudes, it is the one that asks for work. Meekness and mercy can be carried quietly; peace has to be built, usually by someone with something to lose by building it.

On a black field the verse is set at the top in small gold capitals. Below it, a cross drawn in gold outline, its center filled with deep bronze, stands over the faint gold lines of a waving flag, its stars picked out as tiny points. Two laurel branches cross beneath. It is all black and gold, and quiet in tone.

Important time to show support for our country

My office has slowly turned into an American museum. I started with the Iwo Jima painting, but now I've got a full wall of historical American posters. Quality is great and easy to hang.
