★ The National Motto ★

How a four-word motto became official on July 30, 1956

For most of its history the United States had no official motto. E Pluribus Unum, on the Great Seal since 1782, served as an informal one. On July 30, 1956, Congress passed a joint resolution declaring "In God We Trust" the national motto, and President Eisenhower signed it.

The words were already familiar. They had been on the two-cent coin since 1864, and Francis Scott Key had written something close to them in 1814, in the fourth verse of what became "The Star-Spangled Banner": "And this be our motto: 'In God is our trust.'" The motto reached paper money on October 1, 1957, on the one-dollar silver certificate.

It names no particular faith; the cross at the center of this picture is the Christian symbol.

A bald eagle spreads its wings across a field of cobalt blue, its head turned to the left, with a golden cross and a burst of sunlit rays behind it. A banner arches over the top carrying the motto, and stars sit in the upper corners. Under the eagle, ripples of red and white stripes run across the bottom edge. Every shape is outlined in dark lead lines, like a church window.

Important time to show support for our country

My office has slowly turned into an American museum. I started with the Iwo Jima painting, but now I've got a full wall of historical American posters. Quality is great and easy to hang.
