One Nation - Under God — detail of the artwork
★ The Pledge (1954) ★

Two words added to the Pledge on Flag Day, 1954

The Pledge of Allegiance first appeared in September 1892, in a children's magazine, The Youth's Companion, as part of a national school celebration of Columbus Day. Francis Bellamy, a Baptist minister on the magazine's staff, is credited with writing it. It said nothing about God.

'Under God' came sixty-two years later. The Knights of Columbus had added the words to their own recitation in 1951 and campaigned for them nationally. On February 7, 1954, the Rev. George Docherty preached in favor of the change at the New York Avenue Presbyterian Church in Washington, with President Eisenhower in the congregation. Congress passed the bill, and Eisenhower signed it on June 14, 1954, Flag Day. Two years later, 'In God We Trust' became the national motto.

The picture is built like a stained-glass window, in lead-lined panes of amber, blue and red. A tall gold cross stands at its center inside a sunburst, with ribbon banners reading One Nation above and Under God below. A flag billows at the left, and a sun rises over a river valley and purple mountains.

Important time to show support for our country

My office has slowly turned into an American museum. I started with the Iwo Jima painting, but now I've got a full wall of historical American posters. Quality is great and easy to hang.
