★ One Nation Under God ★

How "under God" entered the Pledge on Flag Day, 1954

The Pledge of Allegiance was written in 1892 by Francis Bellamy, a Baptist minister, for the 400th anniversary of Columbus's voyage. It did not contain the words "under God."

Those came sixty-two years later. The Knights of Columbus began petitioning for the change in 1952, and Representative Louis Rabaut of Michigan introduced the bill. In February 1954 President Eisenhower heard the Rev. George Docherty preach on the subject at a Presbyterian church in Washington, and on Flag Day, June 14, 1954, he signed the bill that added them.

Lincoln had used a similar phrase at Gettysburg in 1863, when he spoke of "this nation, under God."

On a black ground everything is drawn in thin gold line. An eagle spreads its wings, a striped shield across its chest, beneath a small triangle, a shape long used in Christian art for the Trinity. Below it two laurel branches curve around a plain cross, and ONE NATION UNDER GOD is spelled across the bottom in spaced gold capitals.

Important time to show support for our country

My office has slowly turned into an American museum. I started with the Iwo Jima painting, but now I've got a full wall of historical American posters. Quality is great and easy to hang.
