★ The Fiery Trial ★

Lincoln's 'fiery trial,' and the old symbols of fire and dove

'The fiery trial through which we pass will light us down, in honor or dishonor, to the latest generation.' Abraham Lincoln wrote that in his annual message to Congress on December 1, 1862, in the middle of the Civil War and a month before the Emancipation Proclamation took effect.

The picture leans on two much older images, and both come from scripture. In the Book of Acts the Holy Spirit appears at Pentecost as tongues of fire, and in the Gospels it descends on Jesus at his baptism like a dove. Fire also stands for trial that refines: 'When thou walkest through the fire, thou shalt not be burned,' says the prophet Isaiah.

The ground is near black. A glowing gold cross stands at the center of red-orange flames that curl outward in fine looping lines, and above it a small dove spreads its wings in the same light. One Nation is set in gold capitals at the top and Under God at the bottom.
