Mustang v. Mustang $225
★ American Classics (1960s) ★

A fastback Mustang running flat out beside a real one

The title is the joke, and the picture plays it straight: one Mustang on four wheels and one on four legs, flat out across the same stretch of desert.

Ford unveiled the Mustang at the New York World's Fair in April 1964. Ford had forecast 100,000 sales for the first year and sold more than 400,000, and the car gave its name to a whole class, the pony car. Designer John Najjar first pitched the name with the P-51 fighter plane in mind; it was approved when it came back as a horse.

The animal was here first, by more than four centuries, and the picture lets it keep the lead.

The car is a dark cherry-red fastback from the late 1960s, seen side-on, with a long hood, a black scoop and a chrome bumper. The horse is a bay with a black mane streaming back, running on the far side with its head just ahead of the car's nose. Everything else is smeared by speed: amber flats, low brown hills, a hazy gold sky.

Important time to show support for our country

My office has slowly turned into an American museum. I started with the Iwo Jima painting, but now I've got a full wall of historical American posters. Quality is great and easy to hang.
