The black-and-gold Trans Am and a beer run to Atlanta
Pontiac built 68,745 Trans Ams in the 1977 model year, and 15,567 of them were the Special Edition: Starlight Black paint, gold striping and decals, gold wheels and a gold-trimmed interior.
A film made it famous. Smokey and the Bandit came out in 1977 with Burt Reynolds as the Bandit, a driver hired to haul 400 cases of Coors beer from Texarkana to Atlanta in 28 hours, with Sheriff Buford T. Justice in pursuit. Hobbyists still call the black-and-gold cars Bandit Trans Ams.
The engines were quieter than the looks. A 400-cubic-inch Pontiac V8 at 180 horsepower was standard in most states, a 200-horsepower 6.6-litre version was the upgrade, and a shaker hood scoop rocked with the engine through the opening in the hood.
The car here is black, with a spread-winged gold bird across the hood and a raised scoop at its center, parked on a dirt overlook as the sun drops behind layered canyon walls. Everything beyond it is orange and amber haze.
