Placentia Bay, 1941 - detail of the artwork
★ World War II (1941) ★

Two chairs on a quarterdeck, four months before the war.

In August 1941 the United States was still four months from war. Roosevelt slipped away from Washington on the pretext of a fishing trip and crossed to Placentia Bay, Newfoundland, aboard the cruiser USS Augusta. Churchill came in the battleship HMS Prince of Wales, dodging U-boats across the Atlantic.

They met for four days, August 9 to 12. On Sunday morning the two men sat side by side on the quarterdeck of the Prince of Wales after a joint church service, British and American sailors mixed together on deck, singing hymns Churchill had chosen himself.

The result was the Atlantic Charter — eight points on self-determination, free trade and freedom of the seas, drafted by a country not yet in the fight. Four months later the Prince of Wales was on the bottom of the South China Sea.

Two men in a pair of wooden chairs on a battleship's deck, and everyone else in the painting stands. Roosevelt in a pale suit, one hand raised mid-sentence; Churchill leaning in with a cigar. The officers behind them are turned away toward the water, giving the conversation room. The light is flat and northern, the sea almost white. It looks like a lull. It is the founding of an alliance.
“It was a great hour to live. Nearly half those who sang were soon to die.”

Important time to show support for our country

My office has slowly turned into an American museum. I started with the Iwo Jima painting, but now I've got a full wall of historical American posters. Quality is great and easy to hang.
