I Want You - detail of the artwork
★ World War I (1917) ★

The finger has not moved in a century

James Montgomery Flagg painted Uncle Sam for the cover of Leslie's Weekly in July 1916, under the line "What Are You Doing for Preparedness?" When the United States entered the war the following April, the figure was reissued as a recruiting poster with new words, and more than four million copies were printed by the end of 1918.

The pose was borrowed from Alfred Leete's 1914 British poster of Lord Kitchener. The face was Flagg's own, aged and given a goatee, because he did not want to pay a model.

The Army brought the poster back in 1940 and it stayed on walls through the Second World War. It is still the most recognized recruiting image ever made.

Uncle Sam leans out of the poster, top hat with a starred band, white hair and goatee, blue coat and red bow tie, and points straight at whoever is standing in front of it. The pointing hand is drawn large and close so that it works from across a room. Three lines of heavy lettering below carry the whole message in red and navy. The paper has the warm, softly foxed tone of a poster that has spent years on a wall. Wherever you stand, he is looking at you.

Important time to show support for our country

My office has slowly turned into an American museum. I started with the Iwo Jima painting, but now I've got a full wall of historical American posters. Quality is great and easy to hang.
