Five names on a fifty-mile coast

Five beaches on fifty miles of Normandy coast: Utah and Omaha for the Americans, Gold and Sword for the British, Juno for the Canadians. Behind them, the 82nd and 101st Airborne dropped around Sainte-Mère-Église to seal the Cotentin, and the British 6th Airborne took the bridges over the Orne. Nearly 7,000 ships and craft crossed from Plymouth, Southampton and Portsmouth in the night.

By the end of 6 June 1944 about 156,000 Allied troops were ashore. Omaha, where the German 352nd Division was waiting on the bluffs, came closest to failing. Caen, the first day's objective for the British, held out for more than a month.

The five beachheads were joined into one by 12 June. Cherbourg fell before the month was out. The piece is drawn as a period-style campaign map.

The Channel fills the middle of the sheet, and the five beach labels sit on it in a row like signposts: Utah, Omaha, Gold, Juno, Sword. Solid blue for the Americans, hatched blue for the British and Canadians, a red dashed line along the shore for the Atlantic Wall. The airborne drops curl around the edges as dotted loops. It is a map of intentions — every arrow points inland, and none of them has been stopped yet.
“You are about to embark upon the Great Crusade, toward which we have striven these many months.”

Important time to show support for our country

My office has slowly turned into an American museum. I started with the Iwo Jima painting, but now I've got a full wall of historical American posters. Quality is great and easy to hang.
