Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum — detail of the artwork
★ Stadiums of America ★

A war memorial, two Olympics, and a third on the way

The Coliseum opened on May 1, 1923, as a memorial to the Los Angeles veterans of the First World War. In 1968 it was rededicated to all American veterans of that war, and on July 27, 1984, it was named a National Historic Landmark.

It has hosted the Summer Olympic Games twice, in 1932 and 1984, and it is slated to be a venue again in 2028, which would make it the first stadium to host the Summer Games three times. The cauldron above the peristyle at its east end was used in both.

The calendar has been full: USC football since 1923; the Rams in 1946-1979 and again in 2016-2019; the Raiders in 1982-1994; the Dodgers for four seasons while Dodger Stadium was built; and Super Bowl I in 1967 and Super Bowl VII in 1973.

The plan is drawn from above on a cream ground: a long oval of seating in pale tan, with bands of deep red around the green field. At the top, the peristyle stands as a row of arches under a tall cauldron, and soft green lawns and trees fill the corners. "Memorial Coliseum" and "Los Angeles, California" run across the head in spaced capitals.

Important time to show support for our country

My office has slowly turned into an American museum. I started with the Iwo Jima painting, but now I've got a full wall of historical American posters. Quality is great and easy to hang.
