Dodger Stadium — detail of the artwork
★ Chavez Ravine, 1962 ★

Ridge tops shaved off to fill two ravines and build a ballpark

When the Dodgers left Brooklyn after the 1957 season, they spent four years in the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum, a football stadium that could seat more than 90,000 and was never meant for baseball. Dodger Stadium opened in Chavez Ravine on April 10, 1962.

The site was a tangle of hills and gullies. Crews took the tops off the ridges and used the soil to fill two ravines, making a level site, and the parking lots were terraced into the hillside so that fans could park at roughly the height of their seats.

It is the third-oldest ballpark in the major leagues still in use, after Fenway Park and Wrigley Field, and the oldest on the West Coast. Each outfield pavilion has its own wavy roof, and the San Gabriel Mountains show beyond the outfield. On September 9, 1965, Sandy Koufax pitched a perfect game here against the Cubs.

The plan view lays it out in blue and cream: the diamond in tan at the bottom of a pale blue field, the seating bowl in layered blues closing around it, the two pavilion roofs as small blue shapes at the top with palm trees beside them, and the upper decks sketched in faint outline below. The name and city sit above in small blue capitals.

Important time to show support for our country

My office has slowly turned into an American museum. I started with the Iwo Jima painting, but now I've got a full wall of historical American posters. Quality is great and easy to hang.
