Wisconsin's license plates have said Dairyland since 1940
Wisconsin license plates have carried the words America's Dairyland since 1940, and the claim holds up. The state makes about a quarter of the nation's cheese, more than any other state, and ranks second to California in milk and in butter. It is the country's only maker of Limburger.
Several cheeses were invented here, too: brick cheese in 1877 and Colby in 1885. Wisconsin became the 30th state on May 29, 1848, and its state quarter shows a Holstein cow, a wheel of cheese and an ear of corn. Lead miners around Mineral Point and Dodgeville gave the state its other nickname, the Badger State, after the holes they dug to shelter in.
The poster shows the state on its best morning: a red barn with a tall silo, black-and-white Holsteins grazing in bright green pasture, a farmhouse and a winding road behind, and a gold sun coming up over the hills. WISCONSIN runs across the top in red capitals, and AMERICA'S DAIRYLAND across the bottom in cream on navy, with a red star at each end.
