Rhode Island $225
★ The Ocean State ★

A 12 Metre yacht, a bridge, and the America's Cup years

Rhode Island is the smallest state and calls itself the Ocean State, for about 400 miles of coastline. Roger Williams founded Providence in 1636 as a haven for religious liberty, and on May 4, 1776, Rhode Island became the first colony to renounce its allegiance to the British Crown. Its motto is Hope, and the word sits on the shield in the lower corner of this poster, under an anchor.

The sail is marked 12 and US 16: a 12 Metre, the class that raced for the America's Cup off Newport from 1958 to 1983. Columbia, which beat Britain's Sceptre in 1958, carried US 16; the picture does not say it is her. In 1983 Australia II won the Cup at Newport, ending a 132-year American winning streak.

The poster borrows the look of a 1930s government poster, down to a credit line reading Rhode Island, W.P.A., Federal Art Project. A white-sailed sloop heels across dark bay water with her crew along the rail, a suspension bridge crosses the bay behind her, a harbor town sits on the far shore, and gulls cross the sky. A panel at the lower right is lettered for Newport Harbor.

Important time to show support for our country

My office has slowly turned into an American museum. I started with the Iwo Jima painting, but now I've got a full wall of historical American posters. Quality is great and easy to hang.
