Utah

Utah's nickname goes back to its pioneers. Brigham Young's settlers called their proposed state Deseret, a word the Book of Mormon gives as "honeybee," and the hive became the symbol of a community that worked together. It sits on the state flag, and the state motto is a single word: Industry. Utah was admitted to the Union on January 4, 1896, as the 45th state.

The other half of this poster is the country the beehive is not famous for. Utah has five national parks: Arches, Bryce Canyon, Canyonlands, Capitol Reef and Zion. Delicate Arch, in Arches near Moab, stands about 52 feet tall, sits at the end of a 3-mile round-trip hike, and appears on Utah's license plates. Local cowboys once called it "the Chaps." It took its present name in the 1930s.

In the picture, two hikers with backpacks stand on a ledge of burnt-orange slickrock, one gesturing toward the view. The arch rises against a sky that goes from amber to gold, and far beyond it a snow-capped range stands over the desert, as the La Sal Mountains do behind Delicate Arch in life.
