The Battle of Princeton — close-up of the paper texture and print detail
★ Revolutionary War (1777) ★

The morning Washington rode into the gap

Ten days after Trenton, Washington did it again.

Cornwallis had him pinned at Assunpink Creek on the night of January 2, 1777, and meant to finish it in the morning. Washington left the campfires burning, wrapped the wheels of his guns in rags, and marched his whole army around the British flank in the dark. At first light on January 3 he came out of the trees behind them, at Princeton.

It nearly broke. General Hugh Mercer's brigade ran headlong into Mawhood's 17th Regiment of Foot, Mercer went down under British bayonets, and the militia behind him started to run. Washington rode into the gap on his white horse with his hat raised and steadied the line within thirty yards of the British muzzles — close enough that one of his aides covered his eyes rather than watch him die. The volley came. When the smoke lifted he was still mounted.

Princeton was the third victory in ten days. A revolution written off at Christmas was suddenly a war the British could lose.

Important time to show support for our country

My office has slowly turned into an American museum. I started with the Iwo Jima painting, but now I've got a full wall of historical American posters. Quality is great and easy to hang.
