Arkansas

The Natural State became Arkansas's official nickname in 1995, replacing Land of Opportunity, which the state had used since 1953.

The bluffs and green water in this scene recall the Buffalo National River in the Ozarks, which Congress made the first national river in the country on March 1, 1972, to keep it free-flowing.

The state flag carries a diamond, which a 1987 state law says stands for Arkansas as the only diamond-bearing state in the Union. Crater of Diamonds State Park, near Murfreesboro, was once North America's only diamond mine, and visitors can still dig there and keep what they find.

The travel-poster scene shows a man in a red shirt and straw hat paddling a red canoe down the middle of a green river between pale rock bluffs and forested hills, under towering white clouds. In the foreground, clusters of pink blossoms at the left face a canvas pack and bedroll on a rock at the right. The title runs across the top in brick red, with The Natural State on a green banner at the bottom.
