Pennsylvania — detail of the artwork
★ The Keystone State ★

Penn's Woods, a covered bridge, and deer in the creek

Pennsylvania means Penn's Woods. King Charles II named it for Admiral William Penn, the father of the William Penn who had been granted the land, and the younger Penn was embarrassed by the honor.

The Keystone State nickname dates to around 1800 and points to the state's place at the center of the original thirteen, like the stone at the top of an arch that locks the others in place. The record backs it up. The Declaration of Independence was adopted at Independence Hall in Philadelphia in 1776, the Constitution was written there in 1787, and Pennsylvania was the second state to ratify it, five days after Delaware.

It also has more covered bridges than any other state, over two hundred by one count, ahead of Ohio.

A red covered bridge on stone footings crosses a rocky stream, and below it a doe, a spotted fawn and a second doe bend to drink. Pink and white blossoms that look like mountain laurel, the state flower, crowd both banks, with birches and oaks on a green hill and bright clouds above. A navy band at the foot reads The Keystone State between two keystone emblems.

Important time to show support for our country

My office has slowly turned into an American museum. I started with the Iwo Jima painting, but now I've got a full wall of historical American posters. Quality is great and easy to hang.
