★ The Jersey Shore ★

A Jersey Shore lighthouse drawn up by the general of Gettysburg

The red-and-white tower on this poster matches Barnegat Lighthouse, at the north end of Long Beach Island. Its plans were drawn in 1855 by an Army engineer, Lieutenant George G. Meade, the same Meade who would command the Union army at Gettysburg in July 1863. The light was first lit on January 1, 1859.

Barnegat replaced a 40-foot tower of 1835 that mariners thought too dim and that erosion finally took: it fell into the water in 1857. The new tower has 217 steps and carried a first-order Fresnel lens that cost $15,000. It is known as Old Barney. The light went dark in 1944 and was relit on January 1, 2009.

The boardwalk is the Shore's other landmark. Atlantic City's, opened on June 26, 1870 as a temporary structure to keep sand out of the businesses along the beach, is generally counted as the first in the country.

The picture puts them together. The tower rises over dune grass and a sand fence at left, and the boardwalk runs along the beach to a pier with a Ferris wheel and striped awnings, gulls overhead and small sails far out on the blue water. 'NEW JERSEY' runs across the bottom in cream capitals on a navy band.

Important time to show support for our country

My office has slowly turned into an American museum. I started with the Iwo Jima painting, but now I've got a full wall of historical American posters. Quality is great and easy to hang.
