Montana

Montana's motto is Oro y Plata, Spanish for 'gold and silver,' and the nickname Treasure State points the same way. Gold was first found at Gold Creek in 1852, the rush began in earnest in 1862, and Alder Gulch, where Virginia City now stands, turned out to be the richest of the placer diggings. Butte added silver and then copper.

Montana became the 41st state on November 8, 1889. It is the fourth largest, about 147,000 square miles, with roughly 1.1 million people, which leaves a lot of room. Yellowstone, the first national park, has three of its five entrances on the Montana side.

The poster's own line is 'Where the wild still roams,' and the picture backs it up. A rider in a brown hat and jacket lopes a chestnut horse through yellow grass in the foreground.
