Kansas — detail of the artwork
★ The Sunflower State ★

Wheat to the horizon and sunflowers at the fence line

Kansas joined the Union on January 29, 1861, as the 34th state and a free state. Its official nickname is the Sunflower State; the other, the Wheat State, is just as accurate. About 95 percent of Kansas wheat is hard red winter wheat, sown in the fall and cut when the fields turn gold in early summer.

In the west the plain breaks. At Monument Rocks in Gove County, chalk formations stand up to 70 feet high, left from deposits laid down about 80 million years ago on the floor of the Western Interior Seaway. In 1968 it became the first site in Kansas named a National Natural Landmark.

Sunflowers fill the left foreground of the picture, their faces turned toward the viewer. A red combine cuts through a field of ripe wheat, and a white farmhouse and a windmill stand beyond it, under chalk buttes lit orange by a low sun. "Visit Kansas" runs across the top in cream letters, with "The Sunflower State" beneath, laid out like a travel poster.

Important time to show support for our country

My office has slowly turned into an American museum. I started with the Iwo Jima painting, but now I've got a full wall of historical American posters. Quality is great and easy to hang.
