★ Founding Era (1776) ★

The lawyer who argued Congress into independence

John Adams did not write the Declaration of Independence. He was the man who made sure there was a vote on it.

A farmer's son from Braintree, Massachusetts, Adams showed his nerve in 1770 by defending the British soldiers charged in the Boston Massacre, because he believed every accused man deserved counsel. In the spring of 1776, in Philadelphia, he pushed a divided Congress toward the break.

On July 2, 1776, Congress voted for independence. The next day Adams wrote to Abigail that the day ought to be marked "with Pomp and Parade, with Shews, Games, Sports, Guns, Bells, Bonfires and Illuminations from one End of this Continent to the other." He was two days off on the date and right about the rest. He became the second president and died on July 4, 1826, fifty years to the day after the Declaration was adopted.

The portrait seats him at a writing table in a dark blue coat, cream waistcoat and white cravat, gray hair swept back. One hand rests on a rolled document beside leather-bound books, an inkwell with a white quill and the curve of a globe, while a deep red curtain and a wall of books close in behind him. It suits a study, a library or an office.

Important time to show support for our country

My office has slowly turned into an American museum. I started with the Iwo Jima painting, but now I've got a full wall of historical American posters. Quality is great and easy to hang.
