George S. Patton - Born to Lead — detail of the artwork
★ World War II (1944) ★

What Patton wrote about plans, and what only sounds like him

"A good plan violently executed now is better than a perfect plan next week." That one is documented: it appears in War As I Knew It, Patton's account of the Third Army, published in 1947, two years after his death. The line under this portrait is a different matter. "Better to fight for something than live for nothing" is widely credited to him, though no speech or letter has been traced to it.

What the record does support is the speed. In December 1944, within days of the German offensive in the Ardennes, Patton turned the Third Army ninety degrees and drove north to relieve Bastogne.

Born in San Gabriel, California, in 1885, he had placed fifth in the modern pentathlon at the 1912 Olympics in Stockholm before he ever commanded a tank. He died on December 21, 1945, after a car accident in Germany, and is buried in the American cemetery in Luxembourg among soldiers of the Third Army.

The portrait shows a man in a steel helmet and olive field jacket, binoculars at his chest, a riding crop gripped in one fist. Smoke and orange fires climb behind him, with a flag faintly visible in the haze at upper left. The quotation is set in tan serif at the bottom, over his name in capitals.

Important time to show support for our country

My office has slowly turned into an American museum. I started with the Iwo Jima painting, but now I've got a full wall of historical American posters. Quality is great and easy to hang.
