Benjamin Franklin — Neither Liberty nor Safety $387
★ Colonial Era (1755) ★

Seven lines, one long breath

"They who can give up essential liberty to obtain a little temporary safety deserve neither liberty nor safety." Benjamin Franklin wrote the original on November 11, 1755, in a reply from the Pennsylvania Assembly to Governor Robert Hunter Morris. The French and Indian War had reached the colony's frontier and the Assembly wanted to tax the Penn family's lands to pay for its defense. The governor, acting for the Penns, refused.

The line was a political jab in a tax dispute: the Assembly would not trade its right to levy taxes for the governor's short-term money.

The wording on this poster is the form the sentence took in the nineteenth century. Franklin's own reads "Those who would give up essential Liberty, to purchase a little temporary Safety."

Franklin's profile in pale rose faces right, the long hair falling to the collar, the head filling most of the sheet. Across it the sentence runs in seven lines of light navy serif, set narrow and stacked so it reads like verse. Where the pink silhouette and the letters overlap the type stays crisp. The tone is quiet and bookish rather than martial — a piece for a reading corner or a wall of framed prints.
“They who can give up essential liberty to obtain a little temporary safety deserve neither liberty nor safety.”

Important time to show support for our country

My office has slowly turned into an American museum. I started with the Iwo Jima painting, but now I've got a full wall of historical American posters. Quality is great and easy to hang.
