★ Founding Era (1775) ★

One finger raised, and the biggest type in the collection

On March 23, 1775, the Second Virginia Convention met in St. John's Church in Richmond, out of reach of the royal governor in Williamsburg. Patrick Henry moved that the colony be put "into a posture of defense" by raising and arming a militia. The moderates wanted to wait for word from London.

He answered them from the pew where he stood. No one wrote the speech down. The version everyone knows was reconstructed in 1817 by his biographer William Wirt from the memories of men who had been in the room, and it ends: "Give me liberty, or give me death!"

The resolutions passed by a narrow margin. Lexington was twenty-seven days away.

Henry is a soft rose shape, mid-speech, one hand lifted with the index finger pointing up, the wig and the ruffled cuff and jabot picked out in white. The words are enormous — four lines of a heavy navy serif that run the full width of the sheet, "death!" set largest of all with the exclamation mark given its own space. The letters cross the figure and the paper alike. A thin navy border holds it. It is a shout, printed.
“Give me liberty, or give me death!”

Important time to show support for our country

My office has slowly turned into an American museum. I started with the Iwo Jima painting, but now I've got a full wall of historical American posters. Quality is great and easy to hang.
