Abraham Lincoln - Shall not Perish $225
Close-up detail of the Abraham Lincoln - Shall not Perish framed print
★ The Gettysburg Address (1863) ★

A two-minute speech after a two-hour one at Gettysburg

On November 19, 1863, Pennsylvania dedicated a national cemetery for the Union dead of the battle fought there that July. Townspeople had set out to replace more than 3,500 temporary battlefield graves, and they invited the president to give “a few appropriate remarks.”

The main speaker was Edward Everett, one of the best-known orators in the country, who spoke from memory for about two hours. Lincoln followed with 272 words in about two minutes.

The line shown here is from the last sentence: “government of the people, by the people, for the people, shall not perish from the earth.” Five handwritten copies survive, each with small differences. The Bliss copy is the only one Lincoln signed.

A tall figure in a black frock coat and top hat stands facing the viewer in a hazy, sepia field, a folded paper in one hand. A large flag hangs at the left, a pale set of scales stands at the lower right, and rows of soldiers recede into smoke behind him. The quotation runs across the lower third, with his name below it in gold capitals.

Important time to show support for our country

My office has slowly turned into an American museum. I started with the Iwo Jima painting, but now I've got a full wall of historical American posters. Quality is great and easy to hang.
