Abe Lincoln — detail of the artwork
★ Abe Lincoln, Pop Art ★

Lincoln could wrestle, but the pickup truck is another matter

The real Abraham Lincoln stood six feet four, the tallest president, and as a young man in New Salem, Illinois, he had a local reputation as a wrestler.

In the early 1830s he likely wrestled Jack Armstrong, the informal champion of the Clary's Grove Boys, and accounts disagree on who won. The claim that he lost only one match in nearly 300 is unproven. In 1992 the National Wrestling Hall of Fame gave him its Outstanding American award.

None of the rest happened. No pistols, no pickup, no flaming grill in the background, and it is hard to picture him in sunglasses. He did enjoy a joke, especially one at his own expense, and this picture is in that spirit.

It is built in orange, blue and red like an action-movie ad: Lincoln in a stovepipe hat and sunglasses, a star-covered tank top, a pistol in each hand and a full-size pickup held overhead with a bald eagle on its roof. Fireworks burst at the upper left, with palm trees and a flaming grill at the bottom.

Important time to show support for our country

My office has slowly turned into an American museum. I started with the Iwo Jima painting, but now I've got a full wall of historical American posters. Quality is great and easy to hang.
