The Storm at Chapultepec $225
★ Mexican-American War (1847) ★

Chapultepec's wall, the scaling ladders and Pickett's flag

Chapultepec Castle stood on a rocky hill on the western approach to Mexico City. In September 1847 it stood between Gen. Winfield Scott's army and the capital.

After a day of bombardment, the assault went in on the 13th. Scott organized two storming parties of about 250 men each, 40 Marines among them, with scaling ladders. Gen. Nicolás Bravo held the castle with roughly 832 men, about 200 of them military cadets. Six of those cadets died there, and Mexico honors them as the Niños Héroes.

The young American officers on that slope read like a preview of the Civil War. Lt. James Longstreet was wounded at the base of the wall and handed the colors to his friend Lt. George Pickett, who carried the flag over the wall and up to the roof of the palace. Mexico City fell the next day, and the Marines put "the Halls of Montezuma" into the first line of their hymn.

The painting stacks the whole climb in one tall frame. The castle floats at the top in smoke and gold light, two Mexican flags flying over its towers and defenders crowding its balconies. Below, blue-coated infantry scramble up with fixed bayonets, and in the middle of the slope a mounted officer in a broad hat holds the Stars and Stripes high.

Important time to show support for our country

My office has slowly turned into an American museum. I started with the Iwo Jima painting, but now I've got a full wall of historical American posters. Quality is great and easy to hang.
