The Saber-toothed Cat $225
★ Ice Age America ★

California's state fossil, pulled out of the asphalt in Los Angeles

The old nickname gets one thing wrong. Smilodon was not a tiger, or even a close relative of one. It was a saber-toothed cat, built around two long upper canines.

The best record of it anywhere sits in the middle of Los Angeles. At the La Brea Tar Pits, sticky asphalt seeping up from below trapped animals like flies on paper, and the predators that came to feed on them got stuck too. More than 2,000 individual Smilodon have come out of the pits, second only to the dire wolf among the large animals found there. California made the saber-toothed cat its state fossil in 1973.

The cat was heavily built, roughly 350 to 620 pounds, and its jaw could open more than 110 degrees, against about 65 for a lion, enough to clear those canines for a bite. The youngest Smilodon from La Brea has been dated to about 13,000 years ago.

The poster shows a powerful cat standing on open, scrubby ground, front legs thick as posts, the two sabers hanging well below the jaw, with hills rolling away under a cloudy sky. It is toned in sepia, and the layout reads like a specimen label: the common name in serif capitals, Smilodon fatalis in italics, a short caption beneath.

Important time to show support for our country

My office has slowly turned into an American museum. I started with the Iwo Jima painting, but now I've got a full wall of historical American posters. Quality is great and easy to hang.
