★ The Cold War (1987) ★

Brandenburg Gate, 1987: the line some advisers wanted cut

On June 12, 1987, President Reagan spoke at the Brandenburg Gate in West Berlin. The gate, built between 1788 and 1791, stood on the eastern side of the Berlin Wall, closed to traffic and pedestrians for as long as the Wall stood. With it behind him, Reagan addressed the Soviet leader directly: "Mr. Gorbachev, tear down this wall."

The line nearly did not survive. Speechwriter Peter Robinson drafted the speech, and several senior aides argued against that sentence. Chief of Staff Howard Baker called it "extreme" and "unpresidential." After a meeting on May 18, Reagan said, "I think we'll leave it in." The Wall came down on November 9, 1989.

In the picture he stands at a dark lectern with a bank of microphones, in a navy suit with a red tie and a white pocket handkerchief, looking out over the crowd. Behind him the gate fills the middle of the frame, its columns pale under heavy gray cloud, the chariot statue on top. American and German flags stand at both edges, and the crowd packs the foreground.

Important time to show support for our country

My office has slowly turned into an American museum. I started with the Iwo Jima painting, but now I've got a full wall of historical American posters. Quality is great and easy to hang.
