★ Father's Day (1910) ★

A cape, a toddler in the air, and the first Father's Day

Father's Day began with a man who handled a great deal on his own. William Jackson Smart, a Civil War veteran, was widowed on a farm west of Spokane, Washington, when his wife died in childbirth with their sixth child, and he raised the family from there. His daughter Sonora Smart Dodd campaigned for a day to honor fathers, and the first Father's Day was celebrated in Spokane on June 19, 1910.

It took a long time to become official. In 1966 President Lyndon Johnson signed a proclamation naming the third Sunday of June as Father's Day, and in 1972 President Nixon made the observance permanent.

The cape here is the joke and the point. A man stands with one arm straight up, holding a toddler at the top of the lift, while a long cape streams out behind him as though the wind were blowing for his benefit. The look is a rough black-and-cream woodcut: banked clouds at the top, wind lines streaking the sky, and a heavy black border around the whole scene.

Important time to show support for our country

My office has slowly turned into an American museum. I started with the Iwo Jima painting, but now I've got a full wall of historical American posters. Quality is great and easy to hang.
