Gone Fishing — Line Art $225
★ Teaching a Kid to Fish ★

A whole lake suggested by one ripple and a father's arm

There is no lake in this picture. A single small ring of ripples where the line meets the water is all the drawing says about it. The rest is a father, a child and a rod.

The father sits barefoot on a ledge at the water's edge with the child tucked against his chest, one arm around the child as the other hand works the rod. It is the oldest way of teaching a kid to fish: sit close, hold on, and wait together.

American fishing has its own songbook. "Gone Fishin'" was written by Nick and Charles Kenny and published in 1950, and in April 1951 Bing Crosby taped it with Louis Armstrong for his radio show. Decca released it, and it reached number 19 that June.

It is drawn in a thin navy line on a white ground. The father's long rod arcs out to the right and the line drops straight to a tiny circle of water; both figures have bare feet, and the child leans back into his father's arm. The rest of the page is left empty.

Important time to show support for our country

My office has slowly turned into an American museum. I started with the Iwo Jima painting, but now I've got a full wall of historical American posters. Quality is great and easy to hang.
