★ 1776 to 2026 ★

Two hundred fifty years, counted from one summer

The count runs from 1776, when Congress approved the Declaration of Independence on July 4. In 2026 that anniversary reached 250 years, and the word for it, semiquincentennial, is a mouthful.

Congress created a commission to plan it in 2016, ten years ahead. Round-number anniversaries have a way of becoming events. In 1876 the Centennial Exposition opened in Philadelphia, and in 1976 tall ships sailed into New York Harbor for the Bicentennial.

A lot changed between the first count and this one. About 2.5 million people lived in the thirteen colonies in 1776. The 2020 census counted 331 million across fifty states.

The picture keeps to the numbers: a 2, a 5 and a 0 in navy and red on a sheet of cream paper with a soft grain, each numeral set into the sheet so that a shadow runs along its edge. The letters are a high-contrast serif, with thin hairlines and heavy stems.

Important time to show support for our country

My office has slowly turned into an American museum. I started with the Iwo Jima painting, but now I've got a full wall of historical American posters. Quality is great and easy to hang.
