1969 Charger — detail of the artwork
★ Muscle Car Era (1969) ★

The 1969 Charger R/T and the wing car that followed

Dodge gave the Charger a new body for 1968, and 1969 was the middle year of that shape: a fastback with a long hood, a narrow waist and a roofline that sweeps down to a short tail.

The R/T, for Road/Track, was the performance version. It came standard with a 440 Magnum V8 rated at 375 horsepower, and the 426 Hemi, rated at 425, was the option.

Then Dodge built a Charger just for the race track. The Charger Daytona, with a pointed nose and a wing mounted high on the tail, went into production in the summer of 1969, and 505 were built so it could race in NASCAR. In 1970 Buddy Baker drove one past 200 miles per hour, the first time any car had done that in a NASCAR series.

The car in this scene is the plain R/T, dark and glossy, with an R/T badge up front, driving a desert road at dusk. A big orange sun sits low over red mesas, an eagle crosses the sky above the hood, and a flag on a tall pole stands at the roadside.

Important time to show support for our country

My office has slowly turned into an American museum. I started with the Iwo Jima painting, but now I've got a full wall of historical American posters. Quality is great and easy to hang.
