The stone walls running through these fields were not built for looks. New England farmers pulled the stone out of the ground every spring, frost pushing a fresh crop of it up each winter, and stacked it at the field edge because there was nowhere else to put it. Vermont's sugar maples give the state its October color, and the white clapboard church at the valley's center is the oldest arrangement in New England town-building.
