The 1st U.S. Volunteer Cavalry, the Rough Riders, had left their horses in Florida and fought on foot; their colonel, Theodore Roosevelt, rode a horse named Little Texas up Kettle Hill and then on toward the San Juan ridge, beside the regular cavalry and the Black troopers of the 9th and 10th. The heights were carried by evening, Santiago surrendered sixteen days later, and Roosevelt came home a national figure.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eDavid's Napoleon Crossing the Alps, painted in 1801 for the King of Spain and repeated four more times, is the template for every general on a rearing horse painted since; versions hang at Malmaison, Versailles, Vienna and Berlin. Napoleon had in fact crossed the Great St Bernard on a mule behind a local guide. David gave him a stallion, a storm and a pointing arm, and the sitter, who had refused to pose, approved.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eRoosevelt sits the rearing bay in khaki and a slouch hat, spectacles flashing, a blue polka-dot bandana at his throat and a pistol at his belt, his right arm flung up toward the crest at the upper left, where a blockhouse stands in the smoke. The horse is black-maned and wild-eyed, forelegs in the air above the red Cuban earth. Troopers in campaign hats climb the slope on foot at the left with their rifles, and a crew works a Gatling gun in the lower corner.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eDavid's horse carried a man to an empire.
