★ American Heraldry ★
A crest, a quartered shield, two flags and a motto scroll
A country that banned titles of nobility in its Constitution still ended up with a coat of arms. The front of the Great Seal is formally the arms of the United States: a striped shield under a blue chief, carried on an eagle's breast.
Heraldry has its own grammar. The shield holds the main devices. A crest sits on top. Supporters stand on either side, usually lions or unicorns in European arms. A motto runs on a scroll underneath. The American arms left the supporters out on purpose. Charles Thomson wrote in 1782 that the shield is borne by the eagle "without any other supporters to denote that the United States of America ought to rely on their own Virtue."
This picture uses the full European grammar and fills it with American parts.
The crest is a gold eagle with spread wings, perched on the shield's top edge. A gold cross divides the shield into quarters: an eagle's head, a waving flag, the Liberty Bell on red, and a gold star over two crossed arrows. Two flags on gilded staffs stand in as supporters, and a parchment scroll at the base reads UNITED IN LIBERTY. The colors are muted, like an old tavern sign, and suit a den, a bar wall or an entryway.

Important time to show support for our country
My office has slowly turned into an American museum. I started with the Iwo Jima painting, but now I've got a full wall of historical American posters. Quality is great and easy to hang.
