The Statue of Liberty had been dedicated on 28 October 1886, six years before the station opened, and for the passengers coming in from the Narrows it was the first thing in the harbor that did not move. People who made that crossing described the moment for the rest of their lives.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eKatsushika Hokusai made Under the Wave off Kanagawa around 1831 as the first sheet of his Thirty-Six Views of Mount Fuji; impressions of the woodblock print are in collections from New York to London. Its idea is scale turned inside out: an enormous, clawed wave about to fall on three fishing boats, and behind it, tiny and unbothered, the mountain that will still be there when the wave is gone.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eFuji becomes the Statue of Liberty, small and green on her pedestal near the center of the sheet, with the low line of Manhattan running off to the right. Hokusai's fishing boats become two harbor ferries, their decks black with passengers in dark coats and hats, one pitched steeply into the trough at the left and one riding the far swell. The wave keeps its Prussian blue, its fingers of foam and its flat tan sky. Everything in the picture is moving except the one thing the passengers are looking at.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eHokusai's point was that the mountain outlasts the sea.
