The Declaration of Independence

In June of 1776 a 33-year-old Thomas Jefferson sat at a portable writing desk in a rented Philadelphia room and, in a matter of days, drafted the most consequential lines in the English language: that all men are created equal, endowed with the unalienable rights of life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.

Congress debated the text line by line and adopted it on July 4, 1776. When the delegates put their names to it, they were not merely making a statement — they were committing open treason against the British Crown, a crime punishable by hanging. Each man pledged his “Life, Fortune, and sacred Honor” to a cause that could just as easily have ended on the gallows.
