John Adams arrived that April to join him as commissioner, and for the better part of a year the two shared the work and the house at Passy. They could hardly have been less alike: Franklin at seventy-two, famous, unhurried, adored by the French; Adams at forty-two, exact, tireless and easily exasperated. Without the alliance they served, the war does not end the way it ends.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eHans Holbein the Younger painted The Ambassadors in London in 1533, and it hangs in the National Gallery there. Two Frenchmen at the English court stand either side of a two-tiered table loaded with a celestial globe, a terrestrial globe, sundials, a lute and open books, the whole learning of their age set out between them. Across the floor lies a skull, stretched out of shape, that resolves only when you look from the edge.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eFranklin stands at the left in plain brown, spectacles on and a fur cap under his arm; Adams at the right in dark blue, hat under his arm, sword at his hip. Between them the shelves carry a star globe, a quadrant and a telescope above, a globe turned to the Americas below, and on the bottom shelf a lute, a case of flutes, an open music book and a sealed scroll. Green damask hangs behind them; an inlaid pavement of circles runs underfoot. The floor is empty where Holbein's skull would be.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eHolbein's picture is about men who deal in the whole world.
