Sunset on Iwo Jima $119.00
Close-up of the matte museum fine-art paper surface showing fine paper grain and non-reflective finish.

The story behind the art

Iwo Jima was eight square miles of black volcanic ash, and its Japanese defenders had turned it into a fortress of tunnels, bunkers, and hidden guns. When the Marines came ashore in February 1945, they walked into one of the fiercest battles of the Second World War.

For thirty-six days they clawed forward yard by yard. By the end, nearly 7,000 Americans had given their lives and almost the entire Japanese garrison of 21,000 had fought to the death. Admiral Nimitz said of the men who took it that “uncommon valor was a common virtue.”

Here the flag-raising over Mount Suribachi is bathed in the light of a fading sun — not a battle cry but a remembrance, a tribute to the terrible price of that ground and to every man who never came home.

Printed on 200 gsm matte poster stock and mounted behind shatter-resistant acrylic in a 22 mm deep pine frame, available in black, natural wood or dark wood. The print is fitted into the frame before it ships, so it arrives assembled with hanging hardware in place, ready for a portrait or landscape wall.

Important time to show support for our country

My office has slowly turned into an American museum. I started with the Iwo Jima painting, but now I've got a full wall of historical American posters. Quality is great and easy to hang.
