The lower 48 traced in gold light and filled with stars

Every star on the American flag stands for a state, and the rule that made it so is older than most of the states.

The Flag Act of April 4, 1818, fixed the stripes at thirteen and set the rule for the stars: one for each state, added on the Fourth of July after a new state's admission. Since then the flag has grown with the country.

The outline here is the lower forty-eight, and that map had a long run. The 48-star flag became official on July 4, 1912, after New Mexico and Arizona joined, and flew until July 3, 1959. Alaska and Hawaii followed, and the 50-star flag took over on July 4, 1960.

The picture does not tally stars against states. It sets a staggered grid of white stars, each with a cold blue halo, over the West and the middle of the country, and leaves the East in dark navy. The border is a single amber line, bright as a filament, tracing the coast of Maine, the Great Lakes, Florida and the Gulf. STARS OVER THE NATION runs beneath in plain serif capitals.

Navy, gold and white, nothing else. It suits a study or an office.
