Rust, and nothing more complicated

The color is iron. These are Schnebly Hill sandstones, laid down as coastal dune and sea floor around 280 million years ago, and the grains carry a thin iron oxide coat that has simply rusted. The same rock runs gray and buff elsewhere in Arizona where the iron is absent. Sedona takes its name from Sedona Schnebly, whose husband named the settlement's post office after her in 1902.
